This project evolved out of the Public Invasions of Domestication project in which I began to construct trompe l'oeil objects, such as a rock, as a way to camouflage the audio within the public site. For this project I'm interested in how the fabrication of situations or anomalies in public spaces may break up or disturb the banality of life in the suburbs. I am intrigued by the spectacle of the Virgin Mary sightings in anything from a grilled cheese sandwich to salt stains from a highway underpass. The vehement reaction of some people towards these sightings is just one example of the desire to experience something extra-ordinary throughout our predictable, everyday life, however ephemeral the experience may be. My intentions are not to compete at the grand scale of the Virgin Mary spectacles, but to offer a quieter, more subtle contemplation. |
